To describe in blog text on how amazing our trip to costa rica was wouldn't even do a leaf of justice, you'll just have to wait for the pictures. but in short; zoé is best infant to travel with, i'm born to surf & i found a ring in a dead sea urchin, so i put it on sylvie's finger, yea THAT finger.

So, after getting burnt & then recovered from the costa rican sun, i quickly slammed off this custom job for Yannick's "Burned Toast" show at HQ this past thursday. our canvas was any toaster we could find & i found a beauty at an antique store. It's so cool by itself that all i did was play with was existing on it, interesting challenge that i plan on doing again.

My good friends Andrea & Rob are having a silent auction in Sudbury for the devastation that went on in Haiti in which all the proceeds are going to. i had to put at least a few pieces in, so while you're getting some good art, your stack of cash is going to an even better cause than supporting artists, nothing better than that. District 9__deep with holes, but awesome

so i thought i'd post my comments on district 9 since it's been getting a ton of hype mainly from my friends who i respect they're film opinions, but there's just a few too many holes in the plot that i can't look over, plus this gives a good reason for those friends to actually come on to my blog, heh

*****SPLOILERS****** SPLOILERS******

problems i have, in no particular order:

-why isn't Johannesburg covered in other nations' diplomatic bases? i find it very hard to believe that the rest of the world would just let South Africa deal with the first extra terrestrial life ever discovered & not be bothered by other countries. EVERYONE would be all over that, I would fly to south africa to see them

-why isn't the main alien ship riddled with humans? studying, taking samples, trying to get it to work, etc. it's a giant floating alien ship & it's empty, really? i'll go inside.

-how can we understand their language, & they understand ours, but there's no alien diplomat to communicate the situation to the rest of the world?

-why was there only 3 intelligent prawns, but they were able to send a giant spaceship through space & time through the galaxy? why didn't those smart ones get the others to help out in their quest for fuel?

-this goes to most scifi movies when dealing with other planets & aliens, how can they breath our air & withstand our gravity without assistance? blomkamp's short paid attention to their breathing with the robotic suits that the aliens were wearing, why didn't he put those into 9? or at least mention they were having trouble with our planet.

-why are aliens always naked?

-why do they all look the same? same size, same weight, just sightly different colours. even ants have variety in their species, queen, soldier, worker, etc.

SO, since the film is meant to be as realistic as possible, i think these are pretty logical holes that the team could've filled & would've fit within this world. BUT BUT BUT, it was still amazing & you should all go see it. fantastic & real themes. a main character that switches between hero & villain multiple times. bloody incredible CG. the film work was a beautiful blend of vérité & archival footage. & many more things, enough that i want to see it again & i'll definitely buy it. If they just touched on some of these things above, mainly the rest of the world's attention to the prawns, then it would've been an even better movie.

remember a couple months ago when i was saying that i was crazy ass busy, well this is partly why

the fine folks at Headgear called me up for another milk dot, but this time it was in stereoscopic! & because ive been working in the third dimension for the NFB lately i knew how to handle things with 2 eyes. If you wanna see the other two great spots move your mouse HERE & HERE you can also see them all in anaglyph (red/blue) but i can't get them to work very well even with my 4 different pairs of glasses. So my suggestion is to go to a theatre & see Ice Age 3, cuz they're playing before it

i animated this in after effects last year with flo painting his magic. the other day i realized that its been out for over a year, tons of people have seen it, so why not you? It's our excerpt from the short film "Facing Champlain", an NFB/ONF 3d stereoscopic film playing at the Museum of Civilization in Quebec City. You really should go down there if you get the chance, we all put a ton of work into the whole film & this doesn't give you the full impression in all its 3d magic, i also added for this screening some music to help you along your voyage au canada.

from Nov 15 to dec 15 i was in geneva switzerland working on "Land of the Heads", a stop-mo short film by Claude Barras & Cedric Louis. Should be coming out into the festivals by the summer. It was a pretty intense & crammed shoot, but the gang was awesome, unfortunately i can't say the same for Geneva, it's the most boring major city i have ever been to, strange. but it was awesome to work on a film & all i did was animate, nice to have the pressure of actually making the film off my shoulders. of course when i had a chance i was reading & drawing, usually both were accompanied with copious amounts of wine.

hey hey, ive been very absent from this ol blog & i forgot to post why. ive been in geneva, switzerland for the past month working on a short stop-motion short directed my claude barras & cedric louis. Last year they completed an extremely cute & dark film called Sainte Barbe. This new film is called "Land of the Heads" & its even darker, you can imagine from the title. Cant wait to show people it because it looks beautiful, & its just great to just animate, no other responsibilities with the project, let other people have all the stress, heh. im involved because of the great people at the NFB asked & i said oui! i have a week left here in cloudy geneva, the production is alittle behind schedule, so that means its on schedule for stop-motion & now working until 11 on saturdays is a norm.

some sad news this week, flickr has decided that since i can't "self moderate myself" that they have now permanently set my account to restricted. So if you don't have a flickr account &/or you don't have the safe search option turned off, you won't be able to see ANY of my work through that account. This obviously is a huge BEEOTCH, ive worked hard over the past couple years building that account & I really like Flickr, i think its the best place to post work, but now if i want anyone to see my "non-offensive" material i have to create a completely new account, FUCKERS! Why are people so damn afraid of seeing the organs we all fucking have?!?!?!?! especially drawings! especially non graphic drawings!!! ARGGG!

That was THE best screening EVER! i have to thank REPO for being such an awesome film to bring out such an awesome crowd, made it so easy for us & thanks to the after dark fest, super awesome festival that is going big places!

Sylvie & i did a music video for Lil’ Andy & Karaoke Cowboy called “Auburn Fades Away”. Basically we did the whole thing in a month, & we learned so much. its still a blur

Going back to join Kandrix & the very amazing people at the Calgary comic expo this weekend, april 26-27. Im super stoked at doing another con, especially one that I did so well at last year. Planning some new things to pawn off & im giving a talk/presentation about stop-motion, I think calgarians just need help with their insomnia. Well if you're around come over, watch me animate LIVE, & make sure to throw something heavy at me, but not too heavy, dont hurt yourself

We also went to vegas in February to check out the flower at the dam short film fest, super fun time.

Vegas is insane & boulder city is an anomaly; no casinos allowed in, makes the city into a pure virgin like town in the middle of the dessert. Want sin? go down the highway. we were down for the dam short film fest The grand canyon is retarded, we took about 8 million pictures that I still have to go through, it saved our sanity to get some sun for a couple days in the winter.

hey hey, got back a couple days ago from the quebec north drinking, dancing & kissing with quebecors, such awesome people, forgot our cameras so no photos to share of the drunkiness. so with a nice segway, heres that new shirt on WOOT i designed a couple months ago that got released on new years day, not bad sales for a drunk new years day, almost 500 in 24hrs, wah?! you say, i agree. only 15 bucks now, but it wont be for long, if sales are low this dino becomes extinct

When i finally checked my overflowing inbox, i found in the spam box that the flower got into another fest, this time the pain is being shown in vegas! DAM short film fest woo, so sylvie & i are thinking of going, should be a blast

did alittle experiment the other day, i sketched out a girl

markered it with only only colour, looks alright

BUT this is what it looked like while i was doing it, i had my lighttable on the whole time while i was in the dark. i think it's really cool, a glow that you could never replicate. i'd like to play with this some more & have finished pieces in a gallery with lightboxes on the wall as part of the artwork. so the piece becomes 2, one with the light on, one with it off.

previous dr sketchy's, yesterday's wasnt so great for my drawin

most of the time i try to warm up before i start a day of animating, its really important, gets the crap outta me, so i dont have to fight as much with my animation, sometimes it works. well what better thing to get yourself all warm is drawing the ladies, heres a few of the not so bad ones

gotta fix her eyes, but i really want the crazy innocent almost anime cute eyes, not an easy feat

back from the crazy city of NY & like ive told a few people already, i dont like the city, really i dont. Its too much of everything, cellphones, stores, arrogance; everything that i hate about the states. everyone there would tell me "oh theres the US & then theres new york" yea but its still the states in just another terrible form. i still had a good time there cuz of phil, his cousins & his great hospitible friends, the fantastic & friendly organizers of the NYCshorts (david & jen, check out the winners, some amazing films, congrats!), & Alberto who drove through hell to pick me up & drop me off, i owe him a 2four of corona. when theres people like that, the city can't be all that bad, except if you wanna get a place, $4000/mth rent for a bachelor!!

anyways.....before NY my dad came down into montreal to cash in on a very late bday gift. we rode the bikes everywhere, good thing he's not an old man

one day we drove up north to check out the awesome colours in the mountains before they get covered in white. finally remembered to bring my digiSLR out with me, i always forget i bought it, you'd think id remember spending $1200

Then i was busy busy busy finishing up my Munny for montreal munny night at off the hook that took place on oct 26. some of my favs from it, there were so many awesome ones

ive been busy busy these past couple weeks designing up some new shirts (which i will hopefully post very soon) & working on this poster for a Vancouver Burlesque company The Starlet Harlots!! Other than Pop montreal this past weekend, the other main thing that kept me busy last week was making this crazy guy for Camion De Pompier's Nade & B.U.D. custom toy show. i forgot my camera during the show, buts heres some making of pics.
i found chunks of plaster from a graf wall along the train tracks i ride down most days, i originally wanted to keep the colours that i found, but there just wasnt enough of either one colour, or good colours. Too scattered didnt look right

coat in bright metallic orange, Rick Mercer approves! spray painted all the chunks black. wine is a must when doing these

my first idea was to have a face behind the the rocks, bursting through.

Epoxying on the chunks. cuz i was using 5 minute epoxy i could make up a huge batch cuz then it would dry up, so i could only do little bits at a time & wait & wait. then i thought the face looked lame

So i covered up the mouth, but it still didnt look that great. Florian came by & mentioned drilling out the eyes, then i thought about a light

a drill is overkill with a vinyl toy, you can cut through it like butter with just an xacto. so some pieces fell off

You can see the light switch at the base of the head. got it at a dollar store & just bent the LED to fit into the head

All finished! used black wrap on the arms, that took me forever.

This is how i wanted the whole thing to look, but cuz the eyes are cut out, the cool white LED is too bright from the front & you cant see the cracks as well. ah well maybe when i get it back i can tweak it, unless someone buys him??? it'll be at the store for a month.

So yea, that was my first attempt at customizing my own toy, & its safe to say i was over ambitious & i dont think im going to stop, my next show is on October 26 & we're doing munny's, the idea i have for that is even crazier, i have to start now!! Thanks again Fred, Yannick, & Olivier for getting me to take part!

Unlike some of my friends that saw the films this year at OIAF, i was throughly impressed with the variety & content of the work shown. yes there was the expected crap, but there was some solid work in the program. I think people easily forget the amount of work that goes into a film, commercial or music vid, christ! that shit's hard, lets give people a break & enjoy their spotlight with them, even the crap (can you tell i had a film in the program?)

- Persepolis - hands down. but the other 2, AAchi & SSipak & Free Jimmy were both awesome in their own ways, go see them all no matter what theyre descriptions say, trust me i almost didnt

A bunch of stuff has been happening in my little ol life over the past couple weeks, so i'll make 2 posts to cover it all. first off, i went to vancouver for alittle comic con, that was fun, sold a few things, but didnt expect to sell much, just really went to meet more people & i like lugging prints around with me to other provinces ;{) Made a few new connections, saw some old friends & made some new ones, so that always makes a trip worthwhile. stayed at my friends Jess & vincents incredible penthouse in downtown van, so rare to be in a place that has windows in every room. But the real reason for going to BC was visiting my lady on the set of the stop mo feature Edison & Leo being shot in Mission. everything for it is of course top secret, but its looking gorgeous & a ton of my friends are working on it, so you know it will move like angels themselves pushed them along. Mission was awesome for me because i did nothing but read & draw over-looking the frasier river, it was exactly what i needed. i kept feeling that i should go exploring in the forest & mountains behind me, but i didnt & it felt good. some pics of that part of the world

tomorrow im off to the next major city in Canada on my list to see my lady after 2 months (its gonna be good) & to take part in Vancouver's humble comic con. Not sure if im completely happy with the pic above, i think i'll tweak it some more, or just redo it, but it's nice to have a chance to work in illustrator for a bit. So if you're in the vancouver area come on by, kick some sand in my eye, & maybe if your lucky will be worthy enough to talk to my girl. I'll have prints, a bunch of new blobs & my sketch books. Oh & its only running from 11-5 so hurry on in

look what im part of! A custom toy event on Oct 4! we're doing our renditions of B.U.D. & Nade toys. It's gonna be my first time doing one of these, im pretty stoked, i think ive got a pretty darn good idea for my nade. well year 2 at the big con is finito & it was mighty mighty fine! sketch books didnt really sell, but prints sold well, & my blobs sold like mad, really surprised about that. if any of you bought one or some (like the guy who bought 20!), please send me a pic of what you do with them, i apoligize again for not framing them. Also for everyone that put up with me trying to explain my NFB film that takes uses the idea of the blob paintings, just click on the pic below & you can watch it low res (theyre going to put the films up higher soon, i hope), please check out the other films afterwards, theyre worth it

Thanks a lot for the support to everyone who bought something from me or just had kind words to say about my work, chewy has a huge ego now, all my future star wars drawings will have a lot to live up to. For the peeps that im sending copies of the wookie to, it might take a few weeks to get them. im travelling a lot in the next month & my printer is in england right now filming a movie, i'll give you all individual emails soon, dont dispair. when i got home, i realized that i finally didnt have anything insanely pressuring me to finish, it felt good. i sat on my friends balcony, had a beer, then another & drew birds. But the birds were from mr stuart immonen's flickr set of BIRDS. it was great to have some time to just draw for the hell of it, i missed it, still do, but that chance isnt going to happen again for awhile. Thanks stuart for the awesome inspiration

so overall, great time, great people, familiar faces, & bought the best damn book on the planet, pulphope, Paul pope's new book, not sure if you can order it online. i predict this to be beaten to hell in less than 2 months from extensive looking through, thanks mr pope

been real busy these past few weeks, thought i'd share what's been keeping me away from updating this ol blog

first, exciting news for me, my NFB film got into the Ottawa film fest! woo! but you ask, how?, we (the lovely internet) havent seen it yet! well dear friends, the nfb is holding out posting our films in beautiful quality until world animation week, which is of course in october! BUT you can see it low res HERE i'll of course post when the gorgeous copy is online, you need to some of the colours high res, its awesome.
we're not in the competition, but fun to see our work bigscreen none the less. its at the end of sept.

***EDIT*** ive been working on some shorts for a big company through a smaller company, but i can't talk about it until the campaign is done. i posted stuff about it before but i got shut down, heh, contracts

as well as finishing up the **CANNOT TALK ABOUT IT PROJECT**, im working on a jean spot for a new line - Naked & Famous jeans. cant show any of it yet, but im really excited by it, should be really cool. all this mystery, ive been the busiest ive ever been in my life & i can't show anything to anyone about it.

im going back to toronto for alittle bit to work on a cool commercial for head gear, its very similar to the constantines video, & while im there i have a table in the artist alley at the big evil toronto comic con Come check me & my brother out, he has a seperate table with the sexy Neil tavares. THEN im off to vancouver to visit my beautiful lady who's working on a cool stop-motion feature, & while im there im going to be at the little & im sure wonderful Vancouver comic con. that takes place sept 9 & if you're in those con areas, i would love to here you insult me & my work, it doesnt have any feelings
