artist of what?

Well you could feel it, but now its official, the internet is now going downhill....I'm the artist of the month over at CUSTOM52, funny eh?

ive been busy busy these past couple weeks designing up some new shirts (which i will hopefully post very soon) & working on this poster for a Vancouver Burlesque company The Starlet Harlots!! If you're into being seduced by half naked sexy ladies & will be in vancouver on October 27th, then you have to go

couldn't ask for a better client

Other than Pop montreal this past weekend, the other main thing that kept me busy last week was making this crazy guy for Camion De Pompier's Nade & B.U.D. custom toy show. i forgot my camera during the show, buts heres some making of pics.
i found chunks of plaster from a graf wall along the train tracks i ride down most days, i originally wanted to keep the colours that i found, but there just wasnt enough of either one colour, or good colours. Too scattered didnt look right

coat in bright metallic orange, Rick Mercer approves! spray painted all the chunks black. wine is a must when doing these

my first idea was to have a face behind the the rocks, bursting through.

Epoxying on the chunks. cuz i was using 5 minute epoxy i could make up a huge batch cuz then it would dry up, so i could only do little bits at a time & wait & wait. then i thought the face looked lame

So i covered up the mouth, but it still didnt look that great. Florian came by & mentioned drilling out the eyes, then i thought about a light

a drill is overkill with a vinyl toy, you can cut through it like butter with just an xacto. so some pieces fell off

You can see the light switch at the base of the head. got it at a dollar store & just bent the LED to fit into the head

All finished! used black wrap on the arms, that took me forever.

Looks way better in the dark

This is how i wanted the whole thing to look, but cuz the eyes are cut out, the cool white LED is too bright from the front & you cant see the cracks as well. ah well maybe when i get it back i can tweak it, unless someone buys him??? it'll be at the store for a month.

So yea, that was my first attempt at customizing my own toy, & its safe to say i was over ambitious & i dont think im going to stop, my next show is on October 26 & we're doing munny's, the idea i have for that is even crazier, i have to start now!! Thanks again Fred, Yannick, & Olivier for getting me to take part!

Darryl's Hard liquour & Porn film festival on Saturday November 24, 2007 at The Society for Arts and Technology (SAT) in montreal

WOOOO! So far 3 fests for this stupid little film, part 2 is now in full production tilt (phil & i talked on the phone, the machine is running)

also a reminder for all you montrealers in tha hizzie, this thursday night, custom toy show! yah dawg! still working on it tho, but its getting better & better, also putting some of my prints up too, with sketchbooks. i think i heard that theres free beer? (if not, i'll buy you one) thats a genius ploy by olivier to blur your vision while looking at my toy thus making you take your wallet out purchasing everyone elses. hope to see you THERE

Ottawa & after Part 2

Unlike some of my friends that saw the films this year at OIAF, i was throughly impressed with the variety & content of the work shown. yes there was the expected crap, but there was some solid work in the program. I think people easily forget the amount of work that goes into a film, commercial or music vid, christ! that shit's hard, lets give people a break & enjoy their spotlight with them, even the crap (can you tell i had a film in the program?)

So heres MY picks for the categories that i saw, i wrote 3 in certain categories in order of my winner choice. you can check out the actual winners HERE

FEATURE FILM
- Persepolis - hands down. but the other 2, AAchi & SSipak & Free Jimmy were both awesome in their own ways, go see them all no matter what theyre descriptions say, trust me i almost didnt

NEW MEDIA COMPETITION - Animation Short Made for the Internet
- i know what i said above, but i wasnt really impressed with any of the internet stuff, i think people need to step up the internet work, huge huge potential

INDEPENDENT SHORT FILMS COMPETITION
Narrative Short Animation
- Madame Tutli-Putli - its already a classic, probably the 10th time ive seen it & im always blown away, it lives up to the hype
- Pearce Sisters - wicked wicked, whole time watching it i was trying to figure how it was done, just gorgeous & ugly to look at
- Sainte-Barbe - great simple story, & beautiful stop mo to look at

Experimental/Abstract Animation
(why do the abstract filmakers always make their film way too long?!?!? should be a rule for them to be under 3 minutes)
- Framing (Bildfenster / Fensterbilder)

STUDENT ANIMATION COMPETITION
Undergraduate Animation
- Beton - super awesome anti-war film from the guys who know it the best, israel
- Doxology - fun film, the way experimental film should be, interesting & fun
- Pressure Cooker - craziness, i hate goeblins (jealosy)

Graduation Animation
- Milk Teeth - i was so happy this won, everyone i know hated it, its great & dark dark dark, oh & odd
- For the Love of God - hilarious & grad film?!? huh? this category is always so weird....
- Key Lime Pie - beautiful to look at, fantastic design

COMMISSIONED FILMS COMPETITION
Promotional Animation
- National Lottery 'The Big Win' - gorgeous execution & just feels good to watch, lottery?!
- Cravendale 'Out of Stock' - so stupid & awesome, wish i came up with it
- 5 Alive 'Echo' - awesome variety

Television Animation for Adults
- John and Karen - brilliant english humour, wicked wicked timing
- Golden Age - so awesome, just hilarious

There was more, but i missed the kids stuff cuz i was busy watching the awesome UPA retrospective, if you werent inspired after watching these, you need to be in a new business. damn those guys were so good & no one has been able to come close to their genius since. i took some pics during one of the last films, why didnt i clue into doing that during the previous ones?

the simplicity is retarded

like i said im inspired

few other pics from the weekend, in the big theatre

on our way to redeem our free drink tickets

So overall i had a wicked time at the fest & now my new goal is to do films just so i can get passes into more fests, its awesome. i met some new awesome people that i really hope to keep in tough with, priscilla, greta & the rhode island posse, tim & jordyn (well we re-met), andre, darryl & more whom i cant remember their names. great to see some old faces that actually seemed genuinely happy to see me again, weird. Can't wait for next year

Going with this new goal of mine, The Flower got into Film pop montreal!! phil & i are crazy excited cuz not only do we get our film played on the big screen & get passes for the film fest, but our pass allows us into the music fest thats running during the same time oct 3-7! what you say? yea mofo, respect. Its playing in all its glory on OCT 6 & 7 from 12-5 at the Film pop screening room at the Puces Pop Arts & Crafts Fair which is at the Canadian Grenadier Guards Armoury - 4171 de L'Esplanade (just south of Rachel) so if you're around town, please come on out & i promise to let you sucker punch me, just because, BUT if you cant see it there, here it is again

The Flower
Uploaded by Snaleeo

& finally did some life drawing again last night at Florian's, it was great cuz i painted this time out & they arent the worst thing ive ever done, gypsy luck. i was using an old palette with gouache still on it so it gave me some nice colour surprises, i really enjoy playing with colours that arent actually there

this one's my fav

im working on a bunch of other things right now, which hopefully in the next post i'll be able to share.

van & ottawa part 1

A bunch of stuff has been happening in my little ol life over the past couple weeks, so i'll make 2 posts to cover it all. first off, i went to vancouver for alittle comic con, that was fun, sold a few things, but didnt expect to sell much, just really went to meet more people & i like lugging prints around with me to other provinces ;{) Made a few new connections, saw some old friends & made some new ones, so that always makes a trip worthwhile. stayed at my friends Jess & vincents incredible penthouse in downtown van, so rare to be in a place that has windows in every room. But the real reason for going to BC was visiting my lady on the set of the stop mo feature Edison & Leo being shot in Mission. everything for it is of course top secret, but its looking gorgeous & a ton of my friends are working on it, so you know it will move like angels themselves pushed them along. Mission was awesome for me because i did nothing but read & draw over-looking the frasier river, it was exactly what i needed. i kept feeling that i should go exploring in the forest & mountains behind me, but i didnt & it felt good. some pics of that part of the world

beautiful weather the whole week, had to bring it back with me tho, its now 6 degrees, ehhh

tall

lush

then after being back in montreal for 2 days, i scurried off to the ottawa anim fest with some nfb folk. 5 full days of animation beauty. i stayed & partied it up with the amazing gang at headgear which had a 10 year retrospective program that contained a hour doc covering the full breath of their work, which included me slugging away on this commercial, click the pic below to see the whole commercial

some pics of the HG crew
kicking the ball after the screening but before the dinner

great dinner

big party at barrymores on another night
